Out of Africa safari diaries

The original 1929 Gipsy moth plane, GAAMY, featured in the film Out of Africa was acquired by Segera and auctioned at Sotheby's to help raise funds for the lodge's new Rhino conservancy. American actor Robert Redford who played Denys Finch Hatton in the film was actively involved with Segera's Zeitz Foundation and issued a signed letter as part of this significant fundraiser:

“ This plane is a symbol of my first introduction to Kenya and its extraordinary landscapes, people, and wildlife. It also helped millions of people around the world see the beauty of Kenya on film for the first time and serves as a much-needed reminder that nature is precious and needs to be conserved before it's too late. Raising funds to help protect one of Kenya's last remaining wilderness areas and save a species would be the perfect next chapter in GAAMY's incredible story, and I am honored to join the ZEITZ Foundation in this endeavor." - Robert Redford

Conservation

"The retreat is nothing like I have seen before. It's a place to reflect with nature and solitude, a place where guests learn about the community and Kenya's wildlife" - CNN

Segera is proof that true safari luxury is completely sustainable. Owned by the Zeitz Foundation, the Global Long Run Initiative at Segera Retreat supports crucial Cheetah, Wild Dog & Black Rhino conservation. Large solar installations supply all the energy, heating the striking outdoor baths, while recycled and harvested rainwater sustains the lush wilderness gardens. Freshly picked, homegrown vegetables are used to enhance the daily menus. The area features two lush wetlands on the Suguroi and Mutara Rivers, essential habitats for wildlife and diverse bird species. The landscape is dominated by dry savannah, a mix of grasslands and open woodlands, with towering Cathedral Acacias along the riverbanks and wetlands, and scattered Fig Trees along the rockier river sections.
